Saying goodbye to the house, Matias was there to pick up her couch.

Right before we left town, I had the opportunity to see the apartment my family lived in for the first few years of my life.

My mom lived in the apartment building in Santa Monica in her late 20s-30s with a bunch of friends, kind of like Maya in Pasadena.

Her friend John's family owned the building, and he later became our landlord. John told us that the unit was vacant for the first time in years, if we wanted to see it.

He'd redone the kitchen and bathroom, but it was still a similar layout.

This was my bedroom I shared with my brother. It's hard to describe the feeling of being in there, and having the spatial memories come back to me.
